event. He felt confident in Joey’s ability to read people and situations. He had concerns for his own safety while south of the border, but he never thought Joey D. would be snatched off the street. The fact that they could kidnap Joey D. frightened him to no end.
Colt was not alone when arrived at the motel. There were two large, older men in his company. He introduced them as Mike and Robert. Mike and Robert greeted Seven politely and then began the chore of unloading several canvas bags from Colt’s truck in the parking lot. Seven introduced Goat to the men.
As Mike and Robert were unloading the gear, Seven, Colt, and Goat sat at the small round table in the room. Seven proceeded to tell Colt the story that had been relayed to him by Goat. Once he finished his narrative, Goat recounted the event to Colt in Spanish. Colt interrogated the boy, extracting every detail the boy could recall. He made notes on a yellow legal pad.
“Joey told me about the kidnapping business down here, but I never thought that he would get snatched. How does this work? Is there a ransom call? Should we be trying to gather up some cash?” Seven asked.
Colt looked at Seven as he spoke, but he didn’t respond. Instead, he turned his attention back to Goat. He told the boy to hit up all of his contacts on the street and try to get as much information as he could about who took Joey D. and where they took him. He then picked up his cell phone, walked into the bathroom, and locked the door. Seven could hear Colt making multiple phone calls and speaking Spanish. He couldn’t make out or translate the conversation, but Colt’s sense of urgency only tightened the knots in his stomach. Mike and Robert had unloaded all of the canvas bags and they now began to unpack the contents. Seven watched as the men unloaded rifles, handguns, and multiple boxes of ammunition. Seven recalled what Joey had told him prior to jamming a pistol into his prosthetic leg: “Nobody cares what you bring into Mexico; they only care about what you take out.”
